Soal & Jawaban Present perfect continuous (I have been doing) or present perfect simple (I have done?)

 

In this exercise you have to read the situation and then write two sentence, one with the present perfect simple (I have done) and one with the present perfect continuous (I have been doing).

 

1.      Linda is from Australia. Now she is travelling round Europe. She began her tour three months ago.

(she / travel / around Europe for three months) She has been travelling around Europe for three months.

(she / visit / six countries so far) She has visited six countries so far.

2.      Jimmy is a tennis champion. He began playing tennis when he was 11 years old. Now he has just won the national championship for the fourth time.

(he / play / tennis since he was 11) He has been playing tennis since he was 11. (‘has played’ is also possible)

(he / win / the national championship four times) He has won the national championship four times.

3.      Bill and Andy make films. They started making films together when they left college.

(they / make / films since they left college) They have been making films since they left college.

(they / make / ten films since they left college) They have made ten films since they left college.

 

This time you have to imagine that you are talking to a friend. Read the situation and ask a question beginning in the way shown.

 

4.      Your friend is waiting for you. How long have you been waiting (for me)?

5.      Your friend writes books. How many books have you written?

6.      Your friend writes books. How long have you been writing books?

7.      Your friend plays football for his country. How many times have you played (football) for your country?

 

In this exercise you have to put the verb into the correct form, present perfect simple (I have done) or continuous (I have been doing).

 

8.      Look! Somebody has broken (break) that window.

9.      I have been reading (read) the book you gave me but I haven’t finished (not/finish) it yet.

10.  ‘Sorry I’m late.’ ‘That’s all right. I haven’t been waiting (not/wait) long.’

11.  Hello! I have been cleaning (clean) the windows. So far I have cleaned (clean) five of them and there are two more to do.

12.  There’s a strange smell in here. Have you been cooking (you/cook) something?

13.  My brother is an actor. He has appeared (appear) in several films.

He hasn’t asked her yet but he’s going to ask her.

10.  We ate a lot yesterday but we haven't eaten much so far today.

11.  It snowed a lot last winter but it hasn’t snowed (much) so far this winter.

12.  I played tennis a lot last year but I haven’t played (tennis) (much) so far this year.

13.  She worked hard last term but she hasn’t worked hard so far this term.

14.  I watched television yesterday evening but I haven’t watched television so far this evening.

15.  My favourite football team won a lot of matches last season but they haven’t won many matches so far this season.

16.  You’re late again. You’re already been late once this week.

It’s the second time you’ve been late this week.

17.  The car has broken down. It has already broken down twice this month.

It’s the third time the car has broken down this month.

18.  Ann has just finished drinking a cup of tea. She has already had four cups this morning.

It’s the fifth cup (of tea) she has had (or drum) this morning.
